FREE SPURGEON RECOMMENDED COMMENTARIES!!

About this website

Ever since C. H. Spurgeon published his catalogue “Commenting and Commentaries” in 1876 it has been, for theological students in the reformed tradition at least, a standard reference tool in the choice of commentaries.

Sadly however, the large established book publishers have over the last 15 to 20 years moved away from printing the variety of older reformed commentaries which they once used to and although smaller publishers have tried to fill the gap, their valiant efforts still leave us with huge gaps.

A few years ago some internet companies, principally GOOGLE and MICROSOFT commenced the process of producing digital versions of old and antiquarian books. Of course since the fair proportion of books printed in Victorian and pre-Victorian times were of a religious character, we find that they have digitized many of the commentaries which were recommended by Spurgeon.

We were pleasantly surprised to find just how many of the works recommended by Spurgeon, which are very difficult, if not impossible to find in the second hand and antiquarian book market, now exist in digital format. And that gave rise to the idea of this website.

We have therefore reproduced Spurgeon’s “Commenting and Commentaries”, and then provided links to the digital versions where we know of their existence. Most of the digital versions exist as “pdf” files and one would therefore need to download and install the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to read these files. If you do not have Adobe Reader you can download it from Adobe

Some files exist as “html” pages only. These are from sites which have reproduced the text of the work as a web page.

User options

Generally speaking, Microsoft works can be downloaded and viewed on one's computer before saving BUT we only provide a "save download" option for Google books. The "save download" option is not possible for websites where the page is only in html format.

All the books with links are, as far as we are aware, in the public domain and there is therefore NO CHARGE for downloading them.

Please note that some of the files are rather large and may take a while to load/download depending on the speed of your internet connection.

Please also note that sometimes the scans are poor, but still legible. This applies in the main to Google digital works. In the case of some Google scanned works, we have noticed that there are scanning errors which prevent the print on certain pages from being read, and that Google have yet to rectify such errors. Generally speaking the scanning by Microsoft is of a better quality and that is why their digital works are as much larger in size.

We have only uploaded a part of the Catalogue. The rest is still “work in progress”. We hope to have the entire Catalogue, D.V.,  on the website within a short time.

One possible future project (DVD Project)

If there is a demand for it we would be willing to entertain the idea of downloading every available work and burning these onto DVDs and then selling the DVDs at a reasonable price to cover our time investment and costs. If you would be interested in purchasing such DVDs please register your interest using the form above. If we find that there is enough interest, we shall formalise arrangements and write to all interested parties in due course advising of the price of the set so that they may place a firm order.

Other future projects

We have other exciting ideas to develop this website. Please therefore visit us again.

Finally

OUR BOOK STORE WILL BE BACK SOON AS A SEPARATE WEBSITE!

Please note that we have not given up selling books. Our store website is being redeveloped and should be up again in the near future with better functionality and electronic-commerce capability. If, in the meantime, you have a wish list please do write to us and we shall advise you whether we have the books in store.

May the Lord be pleased to bless this modest effort to His Glory.
